Millions of workers around the world use Honeywell mobile computers, scanners, printers, and accessories in a myriad of environments and workflows associated with warehousing/DCs, retail, transportation & logistics, direct store delivery, healthcare, and more. Many of these devices are shared from one shift to the next among workers. It is critical that organizations adopt protocols and procedures for routine cleaning and disinfecting devices for employee health and safety.

This guide will provide answers to questions about how to safely clean your Honeywell scanner.

Scanners (non-healthcare grade)

The following instructions are approved for cleaning the hard, nonporous surfaces of the Honeywell non-healthcare grade mobile computers.

How should I clean a Honeywell Scanners (non-healthcare models)?

Always follow your organization’s hygiene or infection-control protocols and the instructions for use provided by the disinfectant manufacturer.

1. Turn off the scanner.
2. Ensure that the battery is properly installed to prevent liquid from entering the device.
3. Use a pre-moistened disinfectant wipe, or if using a liquid solution, apply the approved cleaning solution to a sterile cloth. Wring out any excess liquid.

4. Gently wipe all surfaces of the Honeywell scanner with the moistened cloth.

Wipe the front, back, sides, top and bottom.
Do not apply liquid directly to the scanner.
Do not allow excess liquid to pool on the device near the scanner window, trigger, cable connector or any other area on the device.

5. Clean the trigger and in between the trigger and the housing.

Use a cotton-tipped applicator to reach the tight or inaccessible areas.
Use a cotton-tipped swab to clean between the tight and inaccessible areas of the scanner.

6. Clean the scanner exit window with a soft cloth or lens tissue that is suitable for cleaning optical materials such as eye glasses.

Dampen the cloth with water (or a mild soapy water solution).
If a detergent solution is used, rinse with a clean lens tissue damped with water only.

7. The scanner charging contacts should be cleaned monthly with a cotton-tipped swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to provide the ideal charger-to-battery contact.

Gently rub the moistened cotton-tipped swab from side to side of the connector.
Rub all sides of the connector with the cotton-tipped swab.
Inspect the cradle contacts to make sure you remove any material left from the cotton-tipped swab.
Allow the isopropyl alcohol to air dry or dry with lint-free cloth or towelette.

Make sure the cradle contacts are completely dry before applying electrical power.

8. Use lint free cloth, cotton-tipped swab and isopropyl alcohol or pre-moistened alcohol wipe to remove debris and grease from surface of the cradle.

Disconnect the power cable from the cradle.
Gently rub the moistened cotton-tipped swab along the pins of the connector.
Slowly move the cotton-tipped swab from side to side of the connector.
Make sure you rub all sides of the connector with the cotton-tipped swab.
Inspect the cradle contacts to make sure you remove any material left from the cotton-tipped swab.
Allow the isopropyl alcohol to air dry or dry with lint-free cloth or towelette.
Make sure the cradle contacts are completely dry before applying electrical power.
Inspect the cradle to make sure you remove any material left from the cotton-tipped swab and/or cloth during the cleaning process.

9. Allow the scanner to completely air dry before turning on the power and/or placing it in a charger.

Warnings/Precautions. Honeywell provides the following warning and precautions when cleaning Honeywell non-healthcare devices.

Do not use bleach.
Do not use cleaning solutions on fabric or leather surfaces.
Always leave the battery installed when you are cleaning.
Avoid pooling the cleaning solution on any part of the product to prevent moisture from entering any opening such as ports.
Do not use abrasive wipes or tissues on the image scanners’ window-abrasive wipes may scratch the window.
Do not submerge the image scanner in any liquid. The image scanner’s housing is not water tight.
Follow all cleaning solution manufacturers’ instructions for use including all warnings and precautions.
Bleach is corrosive to connectors and epoxy and can only be used on the Honeywell Healthcare product line.

What are the approved cleaning solutions that can be used on Honeywell non-healthcare grade devices?

Honeywell Engineering has performed testing to show that various disinfectants should not harm the scanner when used properly. We advise customers to consult the disinfectant solution’s manufacturer labeling for specific information regarding its efficacy against specific infectious pathogens.

Honeywell supports the CDC guidance to use 70% isopropyl alcohol solution or wipe to disinfect surfaces. Gently wipe the hard, nonporous surfaces of your Honeywell product. Don't use bleach. Avoid getting moisture in any opening, and don't submerge your Honeywell product in any cleaning agents. Don't use on fabric or leather surfaces.

At the top righthand side of the page, locate the SEARCH box.
